Home Tips
Whether you know an elderly person who wishes to live independently or moving in with you, these are a few tips to consider to make the bathroom a safer and more convienent living space for them.
1. Doors - doorways should be wide for easy access with a walker or wheelchair.
2. Grab bars - seniors need enough bars to manipulate in the shower or tub area and the toliet are as well.
3. Raised toliet seats - many times it’s too difficult for elderly people to sit and get up from a standard toliet, so you can buy risers to put on the seat to make it much easier to use.
4. Traction - placing non-skid strips or mats on bathroom surfaces like the tub/shower area or the floor if there is no carpeting on the floor is a must for safety sake.
5. Bathtubs - there are tubs that seniors can open a door and step into and they have a seat for them to sit down for ease in bathing.
Nursing homes and journels offer practical suggestions for safety issues when dealing with the elderly. You can easily make a few minor changes that can greatly affect the ease of use for seniors.
